I find that the short story ‘The Five Boons Of Life’ is quite sad and depressing. The theme seems to be about how whatever you may do in life will not bring you happiness and you will eventualy end up dying. This may be because Mark Twain lost two of his children before he wrote and may have felt that life didnt matter anymore.

If you read closely you will note that in “the five boons of life” each gift or boons turns out to be the opposite of what it actually is so if love brings you grief then death will bring life.
